Techno-Economic Analysis of Extractive Butanol Fermentation by Immobilized Cells with Large Extractant Volume

There are several challenges for ABE fermentation to be used in an industrial scale including the low of butanol yield, high energy requirement separation and purification, competeness sugar with food demand as substrat. In this study, techno-economical aspects by using immobilized cells large extractant volume were studied. Overall production process was designed rice straw raw material which is semi-hydrolyzed produce cellobiose, glucose, xylose, arabinose mixture. Concentrated then fed extractive fed-batch cells. Finally, recovered products purified distillation column. By evaluating design small capacity 238 kg-butanol acetone/day, 41.3 MJ/kg-butanol acetone cost 1.91 $/kg-butanol acetone. Although higher than produced petrochemical 1.08 $/kg-butanol, it may reduce if increased.
